After stopping people from performing funeral dirges for webOS, the HP is hard at work to soothe its OS in any way. In an effort to achieve the goal, HP announced its aim to open source webOS approx one and a half month ago. The company today announced its timetable for releasing the source code of webOS. The OS will start its journey in parts from now and the company’s target for offering the complete OS and developer package will be completed in September this year.

The webOS code will be made available under the Apache License, Version 2.0.

January: The trip will commence with Enyo 2.0 and Enyo source code. This Enyo will allow developers to write apps that work on a variety of webOS form factors.

February: The process continues in February by releasing the intended project governance model, QT WebKit extensions, JavaScript core, and UI Enyo widgets.

March: Linux standard kernel, Graphics extensions EGL, LevelDB, USB extensions

April: Ares 2.0, Enyo 2.1, Node services

July: System manager (“Luna”), System manager bus, Core applications, Enyo 2.2

August: Build release model, Open webOS Beta, Open webOS 1.0

The current year is about to bid farewell. We have discussed many top rated technologies that lured us throughout this year, but today we have come up with gadgets/ OS that failed to receive the love of people.

Here are the three things that didn’t appeal and fascinate people a lot.

HP TouchPad / WebOS

Everyone knows that the Apple’s iPad has gripped the tablet market with number one position. So who’s second? The TouchPad by the Hewlett Packard is the second best tablet of the year as it latest batch vanishes in minutes from the Stores. Do you think it great? Yes it is. But let’s look at the background of the tablet.

Hp manufactured a 10-inches tablet that is packed with a wireless printing, absolute multi tasking and the Adobe Flash. The table runs on the webOS that HP got when it acquired Palm with a cost of $1.2 billion. But unfortunately HP manages to sell only 10% units of this $499 tablet. The reason behind this can be that the tablet lacks third party apps.

This gave an impression that the fate of TouchPad is sealed for all the times to come but recently the CEO of the company Meg Whitman tried to drag its dishearten tablet and Operating System from the verge of extinction and made the webOS open source and presented this tablet for $99 only. This drop off in the price, boost its fire sales and made the company to continue with the sales of its webOS tablets.

The HP’s operating system, webOS has failed to get the love of developers in the post PDA times. But this rattles a question in minds that with Android blossoming so rapidly in the Samsung Galaxy Tab and the Amazon Kindle Fire and Windows 8 unveiling next year. Will there be any place for this poor fated webOS?

iPhone 4S

The Cupertino maintained great hype before the launch of the iPhone 4S, but unluckily it failed to wow the customers. The device didn’t let the expectations of the manufacturer down as it earned a business by selling more than 4 million units in the first three days, while its Korean rival hit this record in more than three months.

Despite of the great selling record the iPhone disappoint its fans. Excitement of people vanished when they observed this iPhone with only minimal upgrades to the iPhone 4. The Cupertino giant’s rivals Samsung, Motorola and HTC released 4-inch-plus screen smartphones while the iPhone 4S is designed with the same 3.5-inch screen like its predecessor.

The iPhone 4S debuted with a blockbuster launch, new from inside, with its super rocking Siri, Find My Friends, 8-megapixel, 1080p high-definition camera and A5 dual-core chip processor.

But the iPhone 4S is haunted by many bugs and issues. With the new Android updates revealing in the next year, it is worth thinking whether iPhone 4S will maintain its position in the markets?

Windows Phone 7

Microsoft commenced with a slow start but continue to flourish speedily. The company set up by the Bill Gates is destined to compete with the leading platforms like the Android and IOS with its Mango operating system. The latest device released by the company is the Nokia Lumia 800 which is as amazing as the Meego-based Nokia N9. The Windows Phone 7 platform by the company has been utilized by the HTC, Dell, Samsung and LG but the OS declined the market share of the Microsoft from 1.7 percent in the second quarter to1.6 percent in the third quarter.

Microsoft is expected to release Windows 8, the first platform to work on tablets, smartphones and PCs.

It was buzzed few months ago that Hewlett Packard (HP) is eyeing to shut down its webOS and continue with its PC division. These rumors about webOS appeared just 49 days after the webOS powered TouchPad was released. Since then HP was looking for the highest bidder to acquire its operating system but the high price decided by company keep the suitors away from it. Till then a big question is rattling in minds, what will be the fate of webOS? HP CEO Meg Whitman affirmed a decision about the fated mobile operating system within three to four weeks. It’s been a month now and we are hoping to get this answer at the all-hands meeting for the webOS Global Business Unit scheduled today. The HP CEO Meg Whitman, who wants to take the right decision rather than fast decision, was seen giving positive statements about the OS. Hopefully the CEO has come to a decision let’s wait what exactly is her decision and what she has decided for this operating system. Stay Tuned..

Hewlett Packard (HP) is looking keenly at its PC division which grabs one of the biggest market shares in the world with nearly 17.7%. This news hammers in minds that HP is willing to close its webOS division which was attained in exchange of $1.2bn in April 2010 when it acquired Palm. This shut down will kick nearly 500 employees out of the company.

HP at this decision was of the view that “continued combination of HP and its Personal Systems Group [is] expected to deliver greater customer and shareholder value”.

Along with that, Meg Whitman, HP president and chief executive officer said in a statement that “HP objectively evaluated the strategic, financial and operational impact of spinning off PSG. It’s clear after our analysis that keeping PSG within HP is right for customers and partners, right for shareholders, and right for employees. HP is committed to PSG, and together we are stronger.”

HP has injected with many harmful losses from the high ups of its webOS division when Richard Kerris quits his position as HP’s vice-president of webOS worldwide developer relations and shook hands with the Finnish tech giant, Nokia for the same post.

HP has been on desperate hunt for a potential buyer for its webOS which powers the short-lived TouchPad. Some Expectations hints that Amazon could buy webOS but there is no verification that specifies that Amazon is willing to hold another operating system because it has adopted its own version of Google’s Android software for new Kindle Fire device.

Amazon is thinking to buy Palm and its webOS. Palm is the manufacturer of the smartphone which is owned by the Hewlett-Packard.

According to VentureBeat, if the news appears to be true then it will enable Amazon to work on its own software in webOS, rather than amending Google’s Android platform as it has done with the Kindle Fire. Kindle Fire with a new flavor will emerge for sale in November with the cost of $199.

The Fire was strengthened by the Google Android which has been altered entirely, minimizing the resemblance to a very low level with the real Android.

Devindra Hardawar, an author wrote that “By buying the remnants of Palm, Amazon would have free rein to redesign webOS to its own liking, and it would be able to further differentiate its Kindle devices from the slew of Android tablets in the market.”
Palm was purchased by the HP in April 2010 with the cost of $1.2 billion. It assured that the future smartphones and tablets will be powered by Palm’s webOS. But unfortunately the most eminent product of HP’s webOS, the TouchPad tablet, failed to grip the market against Apple’s iPad, and was suspended with inventory cleared out in a $99 fire sale.

Android was crowned in the charts for the ninth consecutive month, in Millennial Media’s “Mobile Mix” mobile device usage share report for this time. Millennial on the basis of traffic on its ad network, found that the share of the Android on the mobile OS market has sliped to 54% for the month of August, almost twice of the next closest platform. Apple’s iOS has inclined to 28% in no 2 position followed by the RIM’s Blackberry OS at 13 %. The usage share of the Android was 61% and iOS grabs a share of 21% in July, but the huge swing in August is somewhat erroneous. The traffic of the smartphones and the tablet has been combined together for the very first time in Millennial’s August report so it contains some irrelevant comparisons of the past.

Apple topped the list of manufacturers by usage with a 23.19% share in August. HTC stood second with the share of 16.33%. Samsung clinched the third place with 14.55%, Motorola followed with 11.37% and RIM occupies the No. 5 position with 11.06%. Other charts from Millennial’s August report are listed below.
